I just about died when I saw this shot by Newton from Coachella. I mean, how perfectly-cool is this embroidered dress? (Might have something to do with that killer bod, too, though...) I just love how glamorous it is without being the slightest bit unapproachable or fussy. Paired with a simple bodysuit/bathing suit and sandals, beachy hair and a cross-body bag, this girl is pretty much ready for absolutely anything.

Crochet and embroidery always screams high summer, and this year no different. I love how these looks are more polished than the usual summers-old pieces we often see... they remind me of more elegant lace looks, with the red top below feeling especially Erdem-inspired. I'm feeling thrifting calling my name...

On another note, I can't help but feel that these music festivals are the most oft-overlooked and most-important-to-look-to events for retailers. The trend stories these girls are sporting are different, fun, and somehow totally commercial without feeling like it.

Hello! + what to wear to a wedding

I'm terrible at this, aren't I??? I have been so sidetracked by all kinds of real-world things, but I have really missed the blogosphere!

In the meantime, I'm coming off a totally wedding-filled weekend. One of our favorite couples got married on Friday after 9 years of dating and one of my best friends gets married in less than a month. I am starting to really feel like an adult.... I'm also having trouble keeping myself tear-free!

I have to say, choosing an outfit for a wedding is really difficult. How can you find something that is appropriate for 6+ hours of varied activities (church, drinks, partying), and doesn't make you look like a bridesmaid yourself (if you're not one)? It's all about shying away from solid satin-y looks and towards subtly unique details like colorblocking, anything-but-floral patterns, and a bit of shine. Easier said than done... And take it from me, consider the strap-situation carefully... pulling up your strapless dress all night might not make the best photos. This is a dress I kept coming back to, again and again as possibility. I love that it can be dressed up or down, and it's just special enough to be practical even after the event.

I love seeing how "real" (sometimes hard to consider those that are attending the shows I'm drooling over real, but you know..) people dress, in real weather, in real life (again, eh...)--especially since they are often so in tune they're already flirting with the trends on the runway. Take this look...

I love the maxi dressing for winter that is all over the fall runways right now. But I love even more the absence of black. Dressing in nudes, whites, and greys when the rest of the street is all black is so, so refreshing--something I need to try!

overcoming short-comings

For someone who has been obsessed with fashion from a young age, I've always felt like I was in a sort of perpetual sartorial-life crisis. I'm a person blessed/cursed with Olsen stature--5'2", petite against all odds, and age-defying (I still get asked if I'm old enough to sit in the exit row on planes....you have to be 14!). I also always wanted to be a writer and would rather act like Harriet the Spy observing from the sidelines then a circus performer doing cartwheels on stage. So, my relationship with clothing is complicated. The odds of finding something to fit my preteen boy frame are already slim-to-none, but pair that with the desire to appear simultaneously fashionable, mature, and strong, yet not in-your-face ...well, that's hard.

I find it even more troublesome as a woman in her early stages in the workforce. Perception is reality, after all, and first impressions last a lifetime. Our wardrobes and our stature communicate so much to those around us, particularly those we want to impress the most and those with whom we interact the least. So I constantly wonder--what do I need to do to send the message I really want to send? These are a few rules I've learned in the past couple years.

1. Good shoes are deafening--in the best possible way

A great shoe is like the perfect punctuation to a precarious sentence. Nothing showcases your intention, nor attitude, like the shoes you choose. If nothing else, they get noticed--and so will you. During a recent presentation I was nervous to give, someone rushed up to me afterwards to ask where I had gotten my perfect-for-any-occasion lace-up suede wedges and gushed for minutes (they were from Zara, if you must know!). Clearly, good shoes are essential to--just as important as?--a great presentation.

And, by the way, I was never a heel-wearer until I started working (I rebelled--I figured I just wasn't meant to be taller than Mary Kate!), so I truly believe a similar effect can be achieved with flats.... as long as they have some 'tude, like a pair made of leopard-printed pony hair.

2. Dress what you aren't, to be what you want

Apparently, I can come across as, someone told me once, "a meek little nothing." Basically, my worst nightmare in a nutshell. Yes, I'm small, I'm quiet(er), and have a super-young face--but that doesn't sum me up! So, ironically, I get the best responses when I dress completely opposite to the way one might expect. Even though I love girly looks, like circle skirts and polka dots, I look stronger and older when there's a bit of edge to an outfit. I'm working on choosing that short, flirty skirt in leather instead of lace (or pairing the lace with a vintage denim jacket and the aforementioned wedges). Or wearing a sweet, feminine blouse with a black bra. Sometimes it pays to scrape by with something that's almost too much, because... at least you were noticed.

3. Never underestimate the power of time and fit

If all else fails, you can't go wrong with classics. Nothing has become more apparent to me in the past year than the importance of fit, always, and the relevance of your looks. Wearing something that fits your body is the best way to make it look different. I actually look like I have a body when my clothes are close-fitting and it makes me feel better, so I stand straighter, too. (That's why I save my perfectly-fitting Helmut Lang dress for very important days.) Plus, wearing something that isn't the least bit trendy is somehow the easiest way to get noticed and stay remembered--in the day of fast fashion, it's refreshing.

One of my newest editorial obsessions is not even meant for readers of my gender. It's Gilt Groupe's editorial venture to reach today's fashion-savvy male: The Gilt MANual. (clever, no?) Not only do I admire the fresh, magazine-like layout, I'm learning new things about the metrosexual man's psyche and even some fabulous vocabulary. In their new series, Reply-All, I was introduced to the word "sprezzatura."

According to Wikipedia (another helpful obsession) "sprezzatura" is an Italian word that means, “a certain nonchalance, so as to conceal all art and make whatever one does or says appear to be without effort and almost without any thought about it.” ....Of course the Italian's have a word for this.

There is no style more appealing than one that appears to be totally effortless, yet is completely full of interest. I aspire to have a certain kind of sprezzatura in my daily wardrobe--but I just can't stop thinking long enough for that nonchalance to kick in! Maybe I need to spend a few months in Italy, Eat Pray Love style, to really connect with my personal style... Hmm, there's a thought!

There's really nothing more attractive on a man than a crisp white shirt and perfectly-tailored suit. Maybe it's for antiquated reasons--it suggests power or a man bringing home the bacon or something. But, still, I loved it when my boyfriend was in banking for that (though pretty much only that) reason.

Last night I went to an event for recent alumni from my college and met a '06 grad who runs a custom cut menswear business with one partner. Um, awesome. And his outfit was a pretty great billboard for it, too! He was an engineering student, or something, and just decided to go for something he's always been interested in. That makes me think...I needn't be so hesitant to do the things that really interest me.

So, we'll see. In the meantime... what do you like your man to wear?

weather gods: i need my fall

Something crazy is going on--the weather is fluctuating in New York between 40 and mid-60's, rainy and so-sunny-I'm-sweating-with-my-holiday-latte. Luckily, Refinery29 showed off more of Mr. Newton's amazing street style photographs last week so I could live vicariously through them when the temperature creeped upwards. My favorites...

I love the unexpected rust color of that overcoat, the playfulness of light, printed scarves paired with a heavy fur, and the continuation of shorts-as-daywear with thick as hell tights. I'm in Florida for the Thanksgiving holiday, but you can bet I'll be mimicking these looks when I return to 40-degree weather again in NYC on Sunday!

Last week was one of the first in a long time where I felt like I made lots of calculated, but easily decided-upon decisions for workwear. This was in no small part thanks to the many style sites I stalk on a daily basis. For instance, this look I spotted on Vanessa Jackman's blog....

...inspired me to pair a full, black lace skirt from Urban with a chambray shirt picked up at a work sample sale. I threw on a pair of black sandals (getting the last of their wears before fall REALLY sets in) and a polka-dot scarf. Voila! Easy and cool, and just a bit unexpected for work. Plus, I snuck around that whole denim-only-on-Friday rule!

Last week, this quote in a WWD feature really jumped out at me:

“The fact that...[bloggers] are not experts is misleading and their blogging isn’t accurate. It dilutes the message of the store or the designer. Some bloggers are really credible and good. My issue with the bloggers is that they don’t have the authority.”

I wondered, who does Ms. Solomon think has the authority? Especially coming from someone who works at such a huge retail company, I found myself thinking she was crazy. Who has the authority if not the wearers/consumers themselves? If a trend doesn't fly for the "real people" of this world, it's not going to sell, and Bloomingdale's will suffer--no matter if their fashion director, who, I presume, has this elusive authority, endorsed such trend.

Fashion has always been a balance of looking at what is happening on the street and wanting to push things forward. In the day and age of blogs and sites like Chictopia, the not-often-talked-about influence of REAL people is finally coming to light. Anyone who doesn't recognize it is quickly being left in the dust!

Even Bloomingdale's slightly-less-stylish sister, Macy's, has an open mind...

“There’s something to say about celebrity power and blogger power. It influences businesses. It’s not just who designs [the clothes], it’s who wears them.

Nicole Fischelis, group vice president and fashion director at Macy’s Inc.

Not only are bloggers helping to propel trends, they're also influencing how current trends are executed. As Barbara Atkin, VP of fashion direction at Holt Renfrew, Canada, put it, "People are adapting a look and seeing how to wear it immediately...social media will affect how we buy and it will affect our deliveries." This idea of the fashion industry being "swallowed up by social media" is quickly becoming unavoidable, but, if used correctly, it offers an extraordinary way for retailers and designers themselves to learn how to make their items more appealing to the "real world," even continuing to interpret them after creation by altering merchandising to speak to shoppers' desires.

I'm not sure how to explain why I desperately want a see-through-trench-that-looks-like-a-cozy-sweater, but I do.

I've now proclaimed Lim the expert of drool-worthy-yet-neutral color palettes, a genius of fabric mixing and texture making, the lifeline for the polka dot trend, and perhaps the only man who has a chance of getting me into a (uber chic, perhaps even leather) apron (that I'll wear for my lovely boyfriend as he makes us a much more edible dinner than I ever could).

I just love his way of refreshing the summer's one true love: stripes. The idea of making them in part transparent is, well,.... perfect. (Cynthia Rowley clearly shared the sentiment, too.)

And updating the lady-like looks of fall using super sheer blouses topped with big giant bows? Just the cherry on top.

I want to wear every single look in his collection right off the runway--to work or on a date, a party or a red carpet event (should I be so lucky!).

Of course there was a little problem.... the price tag. $350. Sure, I've been googling and Craigslisting trying to find one of these for months with no luck. But $350? I tried to forget about it.

I went home.

I read all my fashion magazines.

But when I got into bed, I found myself still thinking about it.

So this morning, I took the boyfriend back with me to see if it was still there. Living with a boy means, after all, that you have to get approval on such purchases. And there it was! Still in its prime location at the very front of the door... and still $350.

"I don't get it," he kept saying. "I mean, it doesn't make an impact."

"But that's what the impact is! That there is so little impact!" I imagined throwing out our disgusting, clunky, industrial coffee table and watching the air move around this barely-there piece in a fresh new way. I imagined it's hardly-there visual impact doubling our perception of the size of our little apartment. I imagined this would CHANGE OUR LIVES.

Of course, we had to make sure it was the right size. So we got the measurements (37.5" W x 21.25" D x 13.75"H) and went home to check with the dimensions of our current one.

Um, it was perfect.

So I got on my tennis shoes--which meant it was really serious, that we fully inteded to lug this thing home. But when we returned, I started noticing the quarter-sized scuffs that couldn't possibly be buffed out. And the pin-sized scrapes all over the top. But... I loved it! So what's a girl to do?

Sulk on home, I guess.

I logged online, in a last ditch attempt to feel better about my decision, and through some Ebay comments found myself on CB2, looking at...

For $249.

With the same. exact. measurements -- 37.5" W x 21.25" D x 13.75"H.

Oh Housing Works, you sly devil you! Suddenly I realized those crazies didn't do their research, and I'd almost been seriously ripped off.

So thanks to hesitation (and my wary boyfriend), we've found our new addition--that doesn't break the bank! [As much.] There's a lesson to learn!

Fashion's Night Out: downtown NYC style

Last night was the first time I took part in Fashion's Night Out--probably one of the crazier things to take place in NYC! Starting at 6pm, girls in sky high stilettos and studded Jeffrey Campbell wedges began the Mecca-like trek to various department stores and boutiques (lest precious fashion-and-free-alcohol-filled moments be wasted stuck in a cab in the horrendously quick building traffic).

I tried to avoid the crowds by heading downtown to the Meatpacking District... but even though things were rumored to be much crazier up by Barneys, it felt like the whole city was out and alive on those cobblestone streets!

I had high hopes for the evening--and a list of 13 places to visit, including Opening Ceremony's flea market, the Black Carnival on Bowery and Bond, Tory Burch, Phillip Lim, and more. Needless to say I didn't get to every single one, but I did stand right next to Diane von Furstenberg at DVF, admired Catherine Malandrino's gorgeous grommeted leather jacket and jersey harem pants while taking photo after photo with a growing gaggle of fans, and snagged a few freebies while I was at it.

I didn't know what to expect then, but now I do. In case you didn't make it, take notes for next year:

1. Dress code is Bloomingdale's career + mega trend: It was like a massive army of all-black, all-the-time... and I missed that memo! (Not to mention the heels memo, but that's just my style; I wore my fashion hiking boots to prepare for the madness!). Lots of fur, tiny cross body chain strap bags (Chanel and posers alike), and TONS of fringe!

2. Don't wait in lines.... you aren't going to get anywhere. Go to the next stop and spy an Olsen from the street corner!

3. Don't expect food--eat beforehand! And don't eat the free cupcakes. Ick.

4. Not sure how alcoholic these drinks are, but stock up, anyway! And follow girls with free totes!

Hard to believe we've seen the last of August! This summer has flown by. I've been trying to take advantage of the last warm days by being outside as much as possible.

On Saturday, the boy and I sat out by Chelsea Piers on the Hudson River, reading up on our rapidly approaching trip...

Sunday was spent cleaning, buying travel-sized toiletries, and lounging on the couch watching the Emmys.

This is most definitely a cliché answer already (and I think most people would share the same answer) but friends and family are the best people who could give you comfort and love and nudge you back into reality when you’re drifting way too much on Neverland already.

I need your help!! I have to go to an event for [my husband's] work and I don't know what to wear. It is a fundraiser BBQ, and it is at someone's house. The dress code is "Business Casual --ladies, no heels".... WTH is BBQ Business Casual?! And why no heels... it's not like I can wear flip flops!

Ah, the elusive "business casual"--the most vague dress code of all. With those little words you get men in suits and girls in leggings. How do you decide what's appropriate? Basically, don't wear denim. As for everything else? When in doubt, and especially at a work event, it's hard to go wrong with a fitted dress and a sophisticated sandal! [Get around that weird no-heels-clause with a little wedge; maybe they're worried you're going to screw up their lawn in stilettos?] An end of summer BBQ is the perfect time to break out your white denim, too--but do it in the form of a jacket, or you risk grass stains and BBQ splatters!

Today it was 65-degrees and overcast in New York, making the approach of fall a real reality. So what'd I do before heading to work? Threw on a pair of grey skinny trousers, black tank, and a black moleskin drape-front jacket. Several other coworkers showed up in mostly black or otherwise drab-colored outfits, too. What is it about colder temperatures that make New Yorkers immediately discard their color? I'm trying to get inspired by some of the fall runway colorful looks. Instead of pairing grey and black, why not pair sister tones of another hue? Like green... or pink.. or just change it up entirely with opposites.

I'm no advertising creative. I have no experience and know of no research to back up what I'm about to say. But I am a consumer. And I am a Harper's Bazaar reader who actually looks at the hundreds of advertisements dwelling within its September issue. So what I have to say should, theoretically, be valid. BEHOLD: ads that stopped my ready-to-flip-thumb dead in its tracks.

What. Are. You. Doing.

When (faux?)fur and leather started its comeback, I was hesitant because of this very reason.... Memories of tacky, fringed garments, over-the-top mixing, and snake prints (the worst!). These Blumarine ads are, actually, my worst fashion animal nightmare.

I guess there is something to be said about the fact that I looked at it for a long time and am now blogging about it. But done out of disgust... is that really what they were going for?

What do you think? Am I being too hard on Blumarine?

If you were a millionaire... what would your dream closet look like?

It would definitely resemble something like Jenna Lyon's closet. I just love everything J.Crew, and their brand just gets better and better... with shoes to die for! Have you seen the latest swede wedges!?

It's so hard to settle on one palette... but I love rooms with a sort of all white glow about them... light and bright, decorated with creamy pastels and blush pinks. There's just something about a white room that's just so soothing.

Where do you wish you could vacation next?

I would absolutely love to go back to France to see Versailles, specifically Marie Antoinette's little country cottage. I never made it on my last trip to Paris, and one of days I will see it. It's a must!

Name one thing that keeps you grounded.

I love that I can just come home to a quiet place, read a book and sip on a good cup of coffee... it's all about the simple things right?

I've been thinking these things for awhile now and kept them to myself because I assumed I was in the minority... but I just can't keep quiet any longer! I have questions, so many questions. Please, help me answer them.

1. Is this American Apparel or am I in a 80's nightmare?

I've never been a big fan of this hipster-basics-headquarters (and apparently I'm not the only one--rumor has it they may soon be facing bankruptcy), but I did think at least their v-necks were soft. Now that I walk past the store every single day to and from work, whenever I catch a glimpse of their window display I find myself thinking, WHY? Why God, why? What do people find alluring about this place? The excess of polyester pants? The ill-fitting "trendy" model tanks? The seersucker bloomers? I just don't get it. If they can't even make their mannequins look good, how is it a good idea for real life humans? And how are your legs not sweating?

2. LF Stores, can you please clean your room?

Again, a polyester war zone... this time reincarnated into my mother's worst nightmare--a habitually dirty room. Is it supposed to be exciting sifting through piles of crap strewn across tables and shoved into bookcases? Although it's initially tempting because every piece looks so fashion-blogger-cool, I suddenly realize this top I tugged out from underneath a pile of rumpled crap is a $110 polyester concoction that has likely played the role of a mop at some point. And another thing... if you weren't already suspicious enough, the fact that they mark the WHOLE ENTIRE store 60% off once a season means their mark-ups have to be out of this world.

I know I had other things to bring up, but they're escaping me at the moment. At least one person agrees with me on this AA thing--anyone else feel the same? What fashionable things make you crazy?

weekend roundup: eat drink love

I get jaded about living in NYC sometimes--like, why do I pay 2 or 3 or 4 times as much rent as my friends when it's so hard to do the littlest things like grocery shopping and laundry? But then one weekend will remind me why this is the greatest place to live. I wanted to take advantage of one of the last of August, and I think I succeeded!

I had a yummy, airy meal at Northern Spy in the East Village

Shopped the Reiss sale and regular price sections--thanks to the boyfriend's generous birthday gift

Grabbed a delicious sandwich at Bonsignour (I had no idea it was a celeb-hot-spot 'til now!)

Made some new friends day-drinking at The Standard Hotel beer garden, er, biergarten

Relaxed at an evening showing of Eat Pray Love

And relaxed some more at Cafe Gitane in the Jane Hotel post-Sunday-morning-chores with my favorite lunch (smoked chicken on cranberry-nut bread... yum!)

The temperature dropped over 10-degrees this weekend, too, and I suddenly found myself excited for fall--breaking out my new polka dot scarf!

I am a textile designer and illustrator blogging about things that I love. I like to share my personal style through things I am coveting and images that inspire me. I am also planning my wedding for next year so lately I have been tossing some wedding-planning inspiration into the mix as well.

What is your dream job?

I think what I am doing now is pretty dreamy actually. I love it!

When you "grow up" [when does that happen, anyway?] where do you see yourself?

Honestly, I hope to keep growing into what I am already doing. I don't see my job ever getting boring to me. I just hope to get better and better at it.

Eek! Marni, Lanvin, Miu Miu & vintage Halston for dressing up. Probably the same casual, relaxed stuff I wear for every day though!

Spain for my honeymoon!!

When a new trend appears, especially if it's something from decades past, I go through a series of stages quite predictably. First, I HATE IT. Then, my feelings neutralize. And, finally, one of three things happen....

I either:

a. want in on the trend desperately, suddenly, and irrationally
b. refuse to try it myself, even though I have fallen for it, or...
c. never get to the third stage at all and the ambivalence continues, indefinitely

I've been doing some soul searching into my intense reactions and, as I perused many a clog and overall online, I realized... maybe the answer lies in how I felt the first time 'round.

I mean, though I've come to Stage 3, part B [love it, but can't-quite-bring-myself-to-do-it] of the clog trend, I keep thinking about the cheap Candies clogs I rocked when I was 9-years-old. The kind with the stiff band across the toes and the heavy heels and the wooden footbed that rubbed my poor little toes raw.

And overalls, well... how can I allow myself to get back into one of those rough onesies? I was a walking conundrum, one buckle strapped and the other flying loose as I ran around in boys' tennis shoes, flashing playmates with the whims of my OshKosh denim skirtall.

Maybe if I'd been uber cool the first time around, without braces or just-permed-hair [why'd you let me do that, Mom?!], or if I hadn't been born yet and thus was oblivious to these potential disasters, maybe then I'd feel comfortable trying these things again as a 23-year-old. Maybe I wouldn't be worried about suddenly turning into an awkward pre-adolescent tomboy trying to figure out the whole fashion thing.

Alas, that's not the case, and I find myself watching the trends on grown-up-version of girls who bewitched my fourth-grade boyfriend. Fashion gods, give me the strength to break this nasty cycle!

The celebrating continues, though, for my Fantasy Monday feature who happens to be turning 21 today. What perfect timing; every girl should get to dream big on her birthday! Where do you wish you could vacation next?

After spending the past six months traveling through Europe, I'm more than happy to hang at home for now. Eventually I'll get the travel bug again though so I'm thinking I'd like to plan a jaunt up north to Montreal.

What is your dream job?

I wish I knew! I can see myself doing any number of things after graduation this spring. I entertain notions of designing a clothing line, becoming a stylist, selling real estate, decorating interiors, producing paper goods, writing about any one of those things... I'm all over the place!

If you could live anywhere, where would it be?

My freshman roommate and I have lived together all four years of college and we are hoping to move to New York together after graduation. It's so close to home and I've loved interning there the past two summers (currently for Jonathan Adler and last year for Ralph Lauren). It might take a few months of commuting from home in Connecticut and saving up for astronomical rent costs but that's definitely where I envision myself living for whatever the next few years have in store for me.

I'm always replying to interior design posts about how much I LOVE colorful interiors, and the writers must think I'm crazy. For one thing, I blog mainly about fashion. For another, if you visit my home I have the saddest wooden Ikea furniture you'll ever see. So I decided to post some proof.

When I was in Versailles last summer, the majority of the photos I took were of candy-colored chairs and outrageously amazing over-the-top rooms.

Sure there were the random photos of light sliding in through windows

and the odd landscape shots

but really it was the great, colorful fabrics and wallpapers that spoke to me.

How amazing would it be to have an interior like these? Makes you question the whole minimalist movement...

Is it just me or are boys being a little more daring with their hemlines this summer?

Whether it's flashing a bit of ankle or above-the-knee-cap, we're seeing a whole new side of men. It's a little like the days when a flash of a woman's ankle was erotic! (Or maybe that's just me...)

But you can't deny that whether its the male-half of an uber stylish couple, or hipsters and Chelsea boys alike, the trend is taking hold...

...and apparently going nowhere.

fantasy monday: queen for a day

I love this weekly feature because it allows me to become more familiar with my favorite bloggers. Wangari is an almost-25-year-old dreamer from Norway. Until she became my latest fantasy feature, I had no idea we shared more than just a love of fashion and "lazing around": we're both self-described writers, have an indescribable fondness for trees, and a desire for a California adventure. So without further ado...

What is your dream job?
If you would have asked me this question a couple of years ago I would have said journalist (that is what I studied at university) but right now, I have no idea. I know that I want to work within a creative field, but can't seem to narrow it down from film (and tv), fashion or publishing. All those areas have a special place in my heart so if I ended up in one of them I would be more than content.

Show us a photo of your dream home.

If you could live anywhere, where would it be?

I think it would be London. After spending three years of university there, I just fell in love with the city, it really felt like home. But I also would love to live in New York and San Francisco just to see if they could be the place that I feel more at home than London.

Name one thing that keeps you grounded.
A good book. I know it sounds weird, but sometimes my family and friends can be just as demanding and stressful as all the craziness that surrounds me, so being able to escape into a well-crafted book is my saviour.

Where do you wish you could vacation next?

I would love to holiday in California. My dream would be to fly to San Francisco, spend some time there, and then hire a car and drive all the way down the state. Dream stops: Napa Valley, Redwood forest, LA, San Diego, and other small cities along the way. If I could take a small trip to Las Vegas as well that would be amazing.

When you "grow up" [when does that happen, anyway?] where do you see yourself?

I see myself (if I can get over my fears) being a full time author. I love, love to write and if I can make my living doing it I would be so happy and proud of myself. I have written some short stories and poems but nothing extensive (yet) and haven't really tried to get some of my creative writing published (unlike my articles etc). So if I can be that person when I "grow up" that would be beyond amazing.

I am finally heading to a hair appointment this afternoon to do something with this grown-out bob-ish thing and ever-sticking-to-my-forehead side-bangs. I always think I'm going to grow out my hair, but I think I look better with the bob! I've been searching for inspiration, but it is so hard to find fashionable ladies with in-between-length hair. Everyone has either super long locks or tiny little pixie cuts--and I really can't do either of those! Here are some, but none really speak to me...

Also, what shampoo do you guys use? I switched to an organic formula awhile ago, and while I love it for many reasons, I think it takes all the volume out of my hair and makes it feel a little--ick--greasy. If you have any shampoo/conditioner tips without sodium lauryl sulfate I'll love you forever!

I feel like I'm cheating on my true love, the blazer, but as summer goes on, a sheer, light jacket seems like a better choice for the office. I'm falling for these exotic, sexy cover ups that almost feel like they should remain in the bedroom.

I'm so in love with these silky fabrics and soft florals. Though I swoon over the robe-length pieces above, I think it's more approachable when it hits at the waist. Paired with a neutral top or dress, a bed jacket can transform a bare summer outfit into a fresh, office-appropriate look.

This weekend, I spent a very rainy Friday watching Inception. If you're one of the few who hasn't seen it, I urge you to do so RIGHT NOW! It was so good. The story, the music, the actors (can Leo do any wrong?)... But I have to warn you, you might leave with a little idea planted in your head: you have fallen madly in love with Marion Cotillard.

She doesn't even need to speak to reveal what an amazing actress she is--it's all in the eyes! (For those of you who have seen the movie, can you believe that scene that made everyone jump??)

I've always pined in vain for a curvy body like hers--it looks good in anything from uber tight to extra-casual...

She makes me think of French boudoirs, luxe fabrics, and super femme silhouettes.

On a side note: I'm endlessly entertained by people-watching at movie theaters. New York is not a place where you can show up five minutes before the movie begins. You have to get there thirty minutes in advance to get a good seat, at least! I can't imagine many tourists are going to the newest blockbuster, so I'm always amazed when people show up 5-10 minutes before the lights go out and huff and puff over there being nowhere to sit. What did you expect? They stand at the bottom of the stadium seating section, pointing and hypothesizing about how to play a human game of Tetris so they can sit in their group of five... but it's not going to happen! Go get the last few seats in the front row before those are gone, too! Thanks for the pre-movie entertainment, though.

Happy Monday everyone! I had a great weekend in the 'burbs with some college friends...made me miss non-city life a bit, but I'm glad to be back. Now for this week's fantasy Monday interview with fellow blogger, Alison, from Life in the Semi-Fab Lane.

I'm a Chicago native and love all things related to fashion, food and interior design. I've been married to my best friend, Dan, for almost 6 years and have a 2 year old son, Jaxon. I've been fortunate enough to remain working in the fashion industry part-time and spending the rest of my time with my family and friends.

Sarah Jessica Parker inspires my fashion choices {to a certain point}. I love accessorizing with strong pieces, as she often does, like shoes or jewelry.

If you were a millionaire... what would your dream closet look like?

I would probably have a closet similar to Olivia Palermo--I love her wide range of style and designers she wears... And she's a millionaire, so how fitting. [Is she really??]

Show us a photo of your dream home.

This is hard because I have a split personality when it comes to design. For today, this would be my dream home. It's so sophisticated and classic with modern elements and I'm really feeling a modern house at the moment.

What is your dream job?

To be able to blog and earn a nice paycheck along the way. It would be a perfect way for me to do what I love as well as spend time with my little one. There's also the important fact that I would not have a boss!

If you could spend one day with someone who inspires you, who would it be and what would you do?

I know this sounds kind of lame, but Kelly Ripa really inspires me. She works hard and seems to manage her work time and family time so well. Plus she has a gorgeous husband and a rockin' body. In fact, if i had to choose a person to switch lives with - it would be her. Great family, awesome job, she's so adorable and she makes tons of money, and the fact that they have a house in the Hamptons and the city! For sure. I would probably just want to spend the day seeing how she lives her life, from the beginning to the end.

Name one thing that keeps you grounded.

My son, Jaxon, period. If I am stressing over something with work or the hassles of everyday nonsense, I just look at him a think "he's all that really matters!" and everything else just seems so less important.

There's little I find sexier in the summer than a simple summer dress with a bit of ruffle. Couple that with a bare shoulder and I'm sold! My latest find combines my favorite summer trend with my latest black-and-white obsession.

...And I stumbled across two different Chictopia users striking alluring over-the-shoulder glances in this very dress. It's a sign!

I'm also into these easy-to-belt-and-accessorize styles...

Don't they seem so fifth-season-Carrie-Bradshaw? (So what if that was the season SJP was pregnant!) I'd pair them with a vintage belt, embellished sandals, and a simple clutch for day-to-night glamour or white blazer and statement bag for work.

On my walks to work lately, I've seen lots of girls wearing shiny, evening-type skirts with plain T's and tanks. It looks like they've borrowed half of their grandma's (outdated) suit, or fished out the lone half of a mother-of-the-bride look from a thrift shop. Or maybe they've just taken last Wednesday's post to heart and sought out some glimmering neutrals! Why not use evening wear for daytime glam?

I knew what she meant, so I decided to start a new feature where my favorite bloggers/Etsyers/etc could spill their biggest fantasies. Obviously, I had to start with the girl who inspired me... and it was pretty surprising! Take a look:

My name is Lyndsey Meaghan. I grew up in Barnesville, Georgia with my mom and older brother. I wouldn't have a dream closet! I'd take the money and pay off my mom's debt and my grandaddy's medical bills. I'd give 10% to my church, donate a percentage to cancer research, buy a small house for my brother, and put the rest into savings.

What keeps you grounded?

God and my mom are the two things that keep me grounded... I have faith that is so strong I can move mountains and a family so loving they could kill.

I said I wished I could trade lives with a fellow blogger because their lives seem perfect, but then I started thinking..in the 18 and a half years I've been alive, I have been through more than anyone else will EVER go through. I have a story to tell. I have seen the worst and the best sides of everything..I would never change my life for anything.

summer friday: keep your pants on

I take my earlier summer Friday post back--I wouldn't run around nearly pants-less even if I could! Yesterday, I passed a girl on the way to happy hour wearing miniscule pink, lacy, tiered tap shorts and a black tank top.... ah! Even in high summer, I felt I was privy to a bit too much. They were the tiniest things I, and everyone around me, had ever seen. In half a block, I watched 10 people turn to stare.

That's a little too much attention--and skin--for me. I dig the short trend, but I prefer it in a sturdier fabric with a more classic top. Take a cue from these girls, my friend:

I especially love the whole attitude of Jules in the mustard top. Those clogs! The layered jewelry! The effortless hair. Style-envy-overload! What's really funny is in her post right before that to-die-for outfit, she has a look that includes the tap short pictured above (total coincidence!). I guess some people can pull it off ;)

Maybe it's because I'm feeling trapped in my small apartment with an endlessly-barking-for-no-reason dog, but I'm finding myself drawn to interiors that have a carefree feel... and perhaps a big yard not too far away.

I had an awkward moment on Monday. Our dress code is lax, but I'm starting to sense notes are being taken. When my boss said, "You look nice in that little sundress, a bit bare... not that I care." I wondered, Errr...are you sure? Couple that with the WSJ article on the matter and I'm officially in full-blown paranoia mode.

I think I need to up my "power dressing" for summer or, likely, in general. But how can I answer the riddle of our unwritten dress code? It's more fashion than professional. It's more trend than classic. It's also -drum roll- on a budget. So what's a gal to do?

I've decided that my office dress code role model should be a little style icon named Lucy Laucht.

I love how deceptively simple her outfits look--they're never stuffy, or scruffy, just... perfect.

She's really a girl after my own heart. I've always said I prefer to dress somewhat plainly and play up the third piece [vest, jacket] or accessories, and that seems to be her aesthetic, too. But what I'm missing is the base that she's perfected. From the looks of it, there are several things I need desperately:

The perfect white T [x 5]
The perfect khaki trousers
The perfect summer blouse
Shimmering neutrals
To put on some damn heels

At least I know my jacket obsession is not for nothing! But I really need tips for petite-friendly trousers and T's... please share if you have them!

Looks like my polka dot fixation is just the beginning...I'm clearly loving black and white prints in general. I thought it might be specific to the DVF and Marni resort shows, but as I trolled the internet I just kept gathering more and more evidence. The ikat trend has been around for awhile, but it's not going anywhere... and it's evolving like crazy!

I'm a very strange person. Though I'm constantly ruminating over things, I seldom make obvious connections in my thoughts and desires. [This became pretty awkward in a poetry class once, but that's another story.] I've started saving photos I'm drawn to and it took me a ridiculous amount of time to realize a commonality between the majority of them:

I've never in my life picked up something with polka dots and thought, I need this. I always found them too matronly or too young. But now, there's nothing else I want or need to [slightly] cover my body in this ridiculous summer heat.

It's hard to say which one since she was so covered up--I really thought Mary Kate, but now after perusing some photos I'm less sure--all I know is seeing an Olsen was one of the coolest NYC celeb sightings I've had yet.

She was shrouded in black--black maxi dress/skirt, black sweater, black sequined hat--with that beige Marni cardigan tied [above] around her shoulders. It seemed like she would've gotten less attention if she'd showed some more skin--it was sweltering after all!

I felt sort of bad for her actually--can you imagine being so famous that you can't do ANYTHING normal without attracting lots of a-holes like us staring and tweeting and... blogging? ha. And she's my age! Wild.

Anyway, MK[or]A and my friend and I were all at the East Village theater to see The Kids Are All Right--which was great. Go see it, NOW! Julianne Moore and Annette Bening were amazing.

After the movie, KB and I said goodbye to our new Olsen friend [who had attracted lots of NOT-secret-at-all cellphone snapshots] and headed out for a pre-dinner drink, followed by a cheap but delicious meal at Cafe Orlin...

and lots of wandering and fro-yo eating.

Love those kinds of days in NYC.

Yesterday, my boyfriend lost his wallet en route to the airport. We figured that in NYC that meant it was lost forever--but within an hour, I was meeting a conductor at the train station to get it back. He'd gone through a lot of trouble to get it safely and securely back to us. He was tall and lanky and blonde, had a big adam's apple, and a pronounced nose with a little flip at the end. When he handed it back to me, he talked for awhile about how glad he was to have gotten it back and how he'd done everything he could think of to track us down.

Much to my surprise I suddenly wanted to cry! I realized he had a striking similarity to one of my best friends from high school who passed away a few months ago.

So, here's to John, and all the people in the world like him, who restore your faith in humanity from time to time. You are missed.

Like my romper love, my obsession with leather shorts is troublesome because... I CAN'T WEAR THEM TO WORK! If something doesn't have work-non-work balance, I rarely buy it. That's why I'm pretty excited to see the leather skirt happening.

It might not be the most novel idea for the ladies (remember my Workwear Wednesday awhile back?), but for a not-so-into-fashion boy like mine, it's an easy, effortless way to really update an otherwise casual and semi-boring look. Plus while the classic blazer was my favorite, menswear for spring '11 seems to be centered around the third-WOW-piece in general, whether it's a blazer, vest, or toggle coat. Whatever the topper is, add color, print or stripes and it can make the outfit.

I just love easy trends for even the most fashion-savvy-less males... (Smelly, I'm talking to you!) Get that WOW factor!

Look who I ran into while running a quick errand after work on Friday!

workwear wednesday: i dare you to try this

As you know, I came around to the romper trend awhile ago. I actually kind of love them. I love how versatile they are in knits, wovens, ditsy florals, and solids. I love that you can wear them day or night, dressed up or down. But the thing is, you can't wear them to work. If nothing else, my office has a strict NO SHORTS policy--so rompers fall into that. The exception?

JUMPSUITS

Is it a tank? Is it a pant? Oh, it's a LONG romper! Aha, the solution!

But it appears this romper-on-crack is a bit more outgoing than her little sister. Because she's often PRINTED. Like, crazily printed. Like, this, my friends, is A LOT of print.

So this is the romper's answer to workwear. But would you do it--paired with a little blazer? Right now I'm saying NO WAY! But then again, I was pretty wary about rompers in the beginning, too...

I'm feeling uninspired about my workwear this week, so I thought I'd post about a new interior-design-way-of-thinking instead:

COTTAGE IN THE CITY

Sometimes I get a little antsy in the big city and start yearning for dandelions and big trees and beachside huts...or something to that effect. One day I thought, why not turn my apartment into a little shabby chic oasis?

I mean... who says that living in NYC has to mean an ultra-modern, sterile apartment?

I don't know if it's the surprise of summer's steamy return, or if I'm just recuperating after waking up at 4am yesterday for my flight, but these days I am lazylazylazy and playing it safe. I'm finding myself drawn to easy, subtle-but-chic styles and soothing, easy-on-the-eye tones.

monday funday: summer loving

I've been extremely nostalgic lately for the trip I took to Paris last summer. It was right after graduating, and we stayed for 10 days.

About the same time this year, I'm easing back into the work week after an early morning flight that sent me straight from Florida to the office. I'd be lying if I said it wouldn't be amazing to be dropped off somewhere sunny and beautiful for a week, a month, or the entire summer. Cannes, perhaps? That's why I'm in love with these series of photos by Baron Wells (via size too small).

I miss the beautiful streets, flower markets, and fresh pain au chocolat... Maybe it was a silly idea to book my big summer getaway in September--I'm going a little stir crazy!

Whitney Port's outfit on The City last night got me thinking about a new kind of workwear... one that brings back the 80s.

The triumphant return of The Shoulder [thanks Balmain] makes it really work, doesn't it?

Too bad it makes my small-but-broad-shouldered-frame look like a linebacker's!
