summer friday: fashionable [?] signs of the apocalypse

One of my dear web-friends tweeted something the other day that literally made me LOL:
SIGNS OF THE APOCALYPSE: OVERALLS ARE BACK
SHUDDER! I get it, what comes around goes around, what's old is new again... but these babies are making their way back in some scary incarnations. I mean, do they have to be so literal?

Or so trying-too-hard-to-be-cool?

JEAN PAUL GAULTIER

Who wants to wear a full-on denim bodysuit these days, anyway? There's got to be a way to make this modern, chic, and classic.

Then, the clouds parted--and I saw Vena Cava's Resort 2011 collection.
I'm totally feeling their simple, beachy, and understated overall-inspired looks. This is the answer to this trend...something I can really get behind!

The black, slouchy look is perfect--so much cleaner than chunky denim--and versatile, too.

Suddenly, I don't feel as scared--as long as other designers and retailers follow suit.

What do you think?

WTF thursday: the denim on denim trend part 2

I see lots of interesting things on my walks to and from work, like the dude who sits outside of FedEx deep in conversation with a new neighborhoodie each day [why is he always there?] and the ridiculously huge neopolitan mastiff that takes his morning walk down 7th avenue. It's a great time for people-watching and fashion note-taking, too. I pass many stylish Chelsea men (checked shirts tucked into cropped skinny pants) and women (traditional trench paired with short washed-silk dresses).

But, of course, there's lots of second-glance-inducing dressers, too. The thing that caught my eye yesterday? A woman wearing.... a chambray shirt, jeans, AND a denim jacket. Looked a little something like this:

This is a seriously extreme take on the trend--three denim pieces all in one and not an ounce of color!? The most shocking thing was, while I thought it needed work, I wasn't completely horrified.

So, I got to thinking how I might rock the trend. This is what I came up with...

I think the key is to make sure the denims are distinctly different hues. The second step is having lots of fun with accessories! It needs to be made more feminine with bright colors and fun jewelry. I'm obsessed with those Cynthia Vincent for Target wedges [they're the perfect color brown] and my Florida/California roots always come out in my jewelry and printed scarves.

Can you believe the attitude change I've had since my last post on the subject? Are you warming up to the idea at all?

summer friday: denim

I haven't gotten around to buying that chambray/denim shirt I talked about earlier... So in the mean time, this is what I wore today:

I'm usually not a big fan of the feel of white shirts--they're so damn stiff! But I picked up a great one at a thrift shop this year that seems tailor made for my body and so comfy! Plus, it looks like it's one of a kind--no tags or anything!

What do you wear on denim Fridays?

Tuesday

tuesday snoozeday: rethinking denim... & jay leno

Until now, jeggings and a tunic has been my denim-Friday uniform. While I love my jeggings, the swiftly rising temperature is making me feel a little jegging-ed out. These days, I'm finding myself drawn to acid washed denim shirts instead. Who would have thought? What's old is definitely new again! These feel so fresh, and fun, and scream SPRING when paired with flirty skirts or shorts.

On a side note: I know denim on denim is sort of a thing these days, but please. Just say no! I saw a guy on the street wearing a denim button up and jeans, and honestly, I don't see how that can work on anyone other than the coolest of cool. It always reminds me of Jay Leno.
