Friday

summer friday: winding down

It's been a little overcast these days, so I'm finding myself really impressed by this girls' rainy day style. Somehow, I'm never quite as chic.

Sorry for being so MIA in the blogosphere this week! I guess all that writing in the last post really took it out of me ;) Never fear--I'll be returning in full force next week with lots of fun posts. Til then, I'm looking forward to one of the last summer weekends. [Cannot believe those words are coming out of my mouth!]

I'm imagining movies

bike rides

and lots of wine

Have a great weekend everyone! Let me know what you're up to.

summer friday: time to celebrate!

There are so many things to celebrate this Friday...

For one, my life has become somewhat less of a confusing trip down a rabbit hole. For another, one of my absolute best friends just got ENGAGED! And finally, because tomorrow is my birthday.

Here's to a great weekend of celebrating ahead of me, and hoping you all have a lovely weekend as well!

xx,
Laura

summer friday: change is in the hair

A funny thing about blogging is you discover how similar--or dissimilar--your tastes are to your dear readers. I get it, you are not fans of the silk bed jacket! I will never post about it again! haha.

I am finally heading to a hair appointment this afternoon to do something with this grown-out bob-ish thing and ever-sticking-to-my-forehead side-bangs. I always think I'm going to grow out my hair, but I think I look better with the bob! I've been searching for inspiration, but it is so hard to find fashionable ladies with in-between-length hair. Everyone has either super long locks or tiny little pixie cuts--and I really can't do either of those! Here are some, but none really speak to me...

Also, what shampoo do you guys use? I switched to an organic formula awhile ago, and while I love it for many reasons, I think it takes all the volume out of my hair and makes it feel a little--ick--greasy. If you have any shampoo/conditioner tips without sodium lauryl sulfate I'll love you forever!

What is your haircut like? Any tips for me? Off to enjoy the beautiful weather, hope you all have a great weekend!

summer friday: dare to bare

There's little I find sexier in the summer than a simple summer dress with a bit of ruffle. Couple that with a bare shoulder and I'm sold! My latest find combines my favorite summer trend with my latest black-and-white obsession.

...And I stumbled across two different Chictopia users striking alluring over-the-shoulder glances in this very dress. It's a sign!

I'm also into these easy-to-belt-and-accessorize styles...

Don't they seem so fifth-season-Carrie-Bradshaw? (So what if that was the season SJP was pregnant!) I'd pair them with a vintage belt, embellished sandals, and a simple clutch for day-to-night glamour or white blazer and statement bag for work.

Or maybe I'd slide past the no-bare-top work policy sans blazer with this sneaky number:

That's it, I'm breaking my spending freeze tonight!

Off to Jersey this weekend--wonder what kind of trouble we'll get into! What are you all doing? Hope you have a lovely weekend :)

summer friday: keep your pants on

I take my earlier summer Friday post back--I wouldn't run around nearly pants-less even if I could! Yesterday, I passed a girl on the way to happy hour wearing miniscule pink, lacy, tiered tap shorts and a black tank top.... ah! Even in high summer, I felt I was privy to a bit too much. They were the tiniest things I, and everyone around me, had ever seen. In half a block, I watched 10 people turn to stare.
That's a little too much attention--and skin--for me. I dig the short trend, but I prefer it in a sturdier fabric with a more classic top. Take a cue from these girls, my friend:

I especially love the whole attitude of Jules in the mustard top. Those clogs! The layered jewelry! The effortless hair. Style-envy-overload! What's really funny is in her post right before that to-die-for outfit, she has a look that includes the tap short pictured above (total coincidence!). I guess some people can pull it off ;)

Which style do you prefer? It's never too hot to be polished, right?

summer friday: surfs up

It's been so hot in NYC lately, I can barely stand to go outside! The plan was to escape to the beach this weekend, but due to temperamental weather and internet connections (have I mentioned I loathe Time Warner Cable?) I have to stay in the city. So, I hope someone can enjoy cooler shores for me....maybe while wearing this cute little thing!

Happy weekend!

summer friday: if i didn't have to go to work...

...I'd be barely wearing pants all day, too.

My mom always says I'm more modest than she was at my age--but I can't help it! I always feel like my skirt is too short, or too sheer, and get all self-conscious...but then I pass these girls on the street and they seem not to have a care in the world about their skirt being a millimeter away from showing everything to the coffee cart man. What can I do to get over my paranoia??

This weekend I'm heading to Ohio for a mini-family reunion. What are you guys up to?

summer friday: thanks!

I just wanted to say thanks to all of you for your support on my last post. I love that Louise from Fifth Sparrow pointed out that fashion-blogging is really the one escape from all the judgement that goes on in the retail/fashion industry--and all your comments really backed that up. It's greatly appreciated!

Another crazy thing happened on Thursday--my NEW boss resigned! So I am now an orphan... again. It seems I will be boss-less more often than not in this position. Oh, dear.

I'm definitely thankful the week has ended. I sure hope it doesn't rain all weekend like it's supposed to! I guess I'll just dream about Barcelona. The Sartorialist is there now!

summer friday: fashionable [?] signs of the apocalypse

One of my dear web-friends tweeted something the other day that literally made me LOL:
SIGNS OF THE APOCALYPSE: OVERALLS ARE BACK
SHUDDER! I get it, what comes around goes around, what's old is new again... but these babies are making their way back in some scary incarnations. I mean, do they have to be so literal?

Or so trying-too-hard-to-be-cool?

JEAN PAUL GAULTIER

Who wants to wear a full-on denim bodysuit these days, anyway? There's got to be a way to make this modern, chic, and classic.

Then, the clouds parted--and I saw Vena Cava's Resort 2011 collection.
I'm totally feeling their simple, beachy, and understated overall-inspired looks. This is the answer to this trend...something I can really get behind!

The black, slouchy look is perfect--so much cleaner than chunky denim--and versatile, too.

Suddenly, I don't feel as scared--as long as other designers and retailers follow suit.

What do you think?

summer friday: memorial day weekend in NYC

A three-day weekend is upon us, hallelujah!!!! I'm definitely going to savor this--next week is going to be a long one.

Unlike most New Yorkers, we're spending Memorial Day in the city--my parents decided on a whim to come visit us for a change. That means a weekend of acting like tourists and eating good food. I'm thrilled!

Other than restaurants, we haven't planned too much to do. I'm planning on picking up the latest Timeout NY and NYMag today to figure it out tonight. So far this is what we're thinking...

1. A tour of the apartment [dad has never seen it!] and lunch on our roof

2. Checking out the Eco-Fashion exhibit at the FIT museum [best part? FREE!]

3. Dinner at Chinatown Brasserie

4. Sunday brunch, somewhere sunny and fabulous

5. An afternoon showing of 39 Steps

6. Dinner at Balaboosta

7. Getting a glimpse of the sailors

8. Checking out street fairs--maybe the Greenflea on the UWS

Anyone else have any tips??

Hope you all have an amazing long weekend!!

summer friday: a touch of chartreuse

It all started with one little pillow from Ikea and now I'm obsessed with chartreuse as a home accent color.

I didn't realize it 'til today, but maybe I'm drawn to it because it reminds me of sun shining through fresh spring leaves...
