Sunday

sunday kinda-fun-day: the perfect brew

Oh, my love/hate relationship with Sunday is never-ending. I hate how quickly the weekend goes by. I love that after all my Sunday chores it's perfectly acceptable to just lay around.

from Alison via flickr

I'm such a fan of Alison's latest post over at And flowers pick themselves because it depicts exactly how I like to spend every Sunday morning: with the perfect latte. My two favorite neighborhood picks? Grey Dog (a latte the size of a bowl of soup... yes, please! ) and Cafe Grumpy (the perfect name & seriously strong brews!).

Where do you like to start your Sundays?

Hope you had a great weekend!

Fashion's Night Out: downtown NYC style

Last night was the first time I took part in Fashion's Night Out--probably one of the crazier things to take place in NYC! Starting at 6pm, girls in sky high stilettos and studded Jeffrey Campbell wedges began the Mecca-like trek to various department stores and boutiques (lest precious fashion-and-free-alcohol-filled moments be wasted stuck in a cab in the horrendously quick building traffic).

I tried to avoid the crowds by heading downtown to the Meatpacking District... but even though things were rumored to be much crazier up by Barneys, it felt like the whole city was out and alive on those cobblestone streets!

I had high hopes for the evening--and a list of 13 places to visit, including Opening Ceremony's flea market, the Black Carnival on Bowery and Bond, Tory Burch, Phillip Lim, and more. Needless to say I didn't get to every single one, but I did stand right next to Diane von Furstenberg at DVF, admired Catherine Malandrino's gorgeous grommeted leather jacket and jersey harem pants while taking photo after photo with a growing gaggle of fans, and snagged a few freebies while I was at it.

I didn't know what to expect then, but now I do. In case you didn't make it, take notes for next year:

At Catherine Malandrino, just before she arrived. A popular spot due to free totes!

1. Dress code is Bloomingdale's career + mega trend: It was like a massive army of all-black, all-the-time... and I missed that memo! (Not to mention the heels memo, but that's just my style; I wore my fashion hiking boots to prepare for the madness!). Lots of fur, tiny cross body chain strap bags (Chanel and posers alike), and TONS of fringe!

2. Don't wait in lines.... you aren't going to get anywhere. Go to the next stop and spy an Olsen from the street corner!

The famous staircase at DVF, right before she descended.

3. Don't expect food--eat beforehand! And don't eat the free cupcakes. Ick.

4. Not sure how alcoholic these drinks are, but stock up, anyway! And follow girls with free totes!

Did you guys go out for FNO? What was your favorite stop?

weekend roundup: eat drink love

I get jaded about living in NYC sometimes--like, why do I pay 2 or 3 or 4 times as much rent as my friends when it's so hard to do the littlest things like grocery shopping and laundry? But then one weekend will remind me why this is the greatest place to live. I wanted to take advantage of one of the last of August, and I think I succeeded!

I had a yummy, airy meal at Northern Spy in the East Village

[our appetizer, stuffed squash]

Shopped the Reiss sale and regular price sections--thanks to the boyfriend's generous birthday gift

Grabbed a delicious sandwich at Bonsignour (I had no idea it was a celeb-hot-spot 'til now!)

Made some new friends day-drinking at The Standard Hotel beer garden, er, biergarten

Relaxed at an evening showing of Eat Pray Love

And relaxed some more at Cafe Gitane in the Jane Hotel post-Sunday-morning-chores with my favorite lunch (smoked chicken on cranberry-nut bread... yum!)

The temperature dropped over 10-degrees this weekend, too, and I suddenly found myself excited for fall--breaking out my new polka dot scarf!

What'd you guys do this weekend?

reason #29837 why i love new york

Look who I ran into while running a quick errand after work on Friday!

These lovely ladies are part of a series called "Sidewalk Catwalk," where major designers have creatively outfitted mannequins all along Broadway. I snapped some quick shots (by Parsons students, Naeem Khan, and Adam Lippes, respectively) before hurrying home to hand off my keys to a fabulous friend who is dog-sitting while I'm gone. Check out the other awesome mannequins here, or head to midtown to see them yourself!

Happy Fourth of July everyone! Can't wait to chat and catch up on all your blogs when I return.

Monday

urban, you're ruining my vintage high

A lot of you tweeters have said Urban's latest catalog looks very blogger-inspired. Well, I haven't seen it--all the copies at the store were gone!--but I did find an example of what you meant first hand.

EXHIBIT A: THE THRIFTED

You might remember from an earlier post how proud I was to find these babies after a winter of hunting for boyish booties. I was thrilled that, after all the hard work, my pair had the extra perk of cute fringe.

EXHIBIT B: THE MASS-PRODUCED

[$78 on the web; I swear the pair I saw in store were $58]

These fringed beauties were just chilling in the shoe section of Urban last week. Don't these look familiar....damn!

What's better, you think? Hunting and spending an extra $20-40 for mine [that's NYC "vintage" prices for you, but they are real leather, at least] or strolling into UO and getting the PVC pair anyone can have?

Wednesday

cottage in the city

I'm feeling uninspired about my workwear this week, so I thought I'd post about a new interior-design-way-of-thinking instead:

COTTAGE IN THE CITY

Sometimes I get a little antsy in the big city and start yearning for dandelions and big trees and beachside huts...or something to that effect. One day I thought, why not turn my apartment into a little shabby chic oasis?

I mean... who says that living in NYC has to mean an ultra-modern, sterile apartment?

I want kitschy accessories

outdoor furniture as indoor dining sets

and over-loved sheets

If only I had a big country truck to get this all home!

random ramblings: coolly cooky

I've always been fascinated by those people who have wit of lightning speed or just an off-kilter view of the world. That's one of the reasons I love fashion--seeing the surprising combinations different people make. But, hands down, one of the prime examples of this kind of out-of-the-ordinary thinking is a store on Great Jones in NYC called Partners & Spade. The shop is a mish mash of random stuff--some kind of art/ad/creative project of Jack Spade [husband of the well-known handbag designer, Kate, of course]. And I kid you not, five minutes in there is like a wacked out acid trip.

There are antique wooden figures ($3500)..

Framed artist palettes ($345+)..

And polaroids of strangers next to drawers filled with pistachios or gavels.

The first time I went there I walked around in a creeped-out daze, wondering how someone even gets the idea to pick these items up, much less throw them in a drawer no one will see unless they're a particularly nosy shopper. [I kept batting my boyfriend's hand, telling him not to touch anything.. but he opened every drawer to reveal these crazy things!]

I think that's partly why I'm so drawn to this new Etsy shop, Hindsvik [I also keep thinking it's a Scandinavian-based effort, which it's not, but that only helps in my mind these days]. I probably would've overlooked most of the objects for sale if I'd passed them in a vintage store, but the owners of Hindsvik have selected and compiled every item with such care that they really feel like they tell a story that needs to be heard. Plus, the pieces are a great, unique, and easy way to add personality to a[n Ikea-filled] home.

Some of my favorites include:

A playful ship wheel lamp ($45)

A cheerful vintage blue coffee pot ($49)

A giant wooden "&" ($125)

And an antique wooden key collection ($16)

Do you think this kind of eye is something you're born with, or something you can learn? Here's to hoping it's the latter. I'm itching to go on a vintage hunt!

Monday

monday funday: happy memorial day!

I'm very sad to see the weekend end. It was a great having my parents here--we walked around the city a ton, ate lots of good food, and drank just enough good wine.

Today we celebrated Memorial Day by heading to the USS Iwo Jima [above] that was docked on the Hudson River off 47th street for Fleet Week. Standing in the blazing sun for an hour waiting to get on was pretty brutal, but then my dad was like a kid again.

Here's a quick glance at other things we ended up doing this weekend:

The Eco-Fashion exhibit at the FIT museum

A surprise piano player in Washington Sq. Park

Brunch at Cafe Gitane in the Jane Hotel

Shopping at the new Anthropologie in Chelsea Market

Of course, the problem with fun weekends is they aren't terribly relaxing!! Luckily, though, it's only a 4-day week. Phew.

Friday

summer friday: memorial day weekend in NYC

A three-day weekend is upon us, hallelujah!!!! I'm definitely going to savor this--next week is going to be a long one.

Unlike most New Yorkers, we're spending Memorial Day in the city--my parents decided on a whim to come visit us for a change. That means a weekend of acting like tourists and eating good food. I'm thrilled!

Other than restaurants, we haven't planned too much to do. I'm planning on picking up the latest Timeout NY and NYMag today to figure it out tonight. So far this is what we're thinking...

1. A tour of the apartment [dad has never seen it!] and lunch on our roof

2. Checking out the Eco-Fashion exhibit at the FIT museum [best part? FREE!]

3. Dinner at Chinatown Brasserie

4. Sunday brunch, somewhere sunny and fabulous

5. An afternoon showing of 39 Steps

6. Dinner at Balaboosta

7. Getting a glimpse of the sailors

8. Checking out street fairs--maybe the Greenflea on the UWS

Anyone else have any tips??

Hope you all have an amazing long weekend!!

Wednesday

workwear wednesday: carried away

In honor of the Sex and the City 2 movie premiere tonight [which I am sadly not attending! I guess I am a real adult], I decided to do workwear Carrie Bradshaw style..

The longer I look at this outfit, the more convinced I am that this is an actual outfit Carrie wore... Anyone know? I thought I made it up, but CB is so far inside my unconscious who can tell. I had a hard time deciding if she'd go with a sheath dress or fit-n-flare, but I knew she'd dig those shoes [she definitely already owns them], and the weird, totally impractical bag.

Wouldn't it be nice to get to dress up like this for work everyday? It's a "sitting pretty" look, I think. I've decided assistants just cannot wear heels successfully. I'll have to wait for a promotion to get some use out of all those damn things sitting, and waiting, in my closet..

P.S. In perfect timing, it's also Fleet Week in NYC... reminding me of one of my all-time favorite S&TC episodes. I snapped this photo on 5th ave and immediately thought of Samantha.

"Seamen, 12 o'clock!"

"I pray when I turn around there are sailors... because with her, you never know."

tuesday snoozeday: summer sickness

Ugh, having a cold in the summer is the worst.... here I am sitting inside sniffling and blowing my nose when it's 80 degrees and sunny outdoors! It wasn't really an option to take a sick day, so I tried to wear a cute outfit to work to cheer me up..... only I'm pretty sure my dress was a tad too sheer and short [I surmised from leers on the walk over, ugh x 2, luckily my desk is steps away from a closet full of clothes so I borrowed a pair of bike shorts to wear].

'
where I wish I was (the frying pan, NYC) & what I wish I was drinking (sauvignon blanc)

Here's to wishing I were well enough to enjoy the weather... and to hoping I'm well enough tomorrow to see Sex and the City 2!

Wednesday

workwear wednesday: back to classic

Lately I've been into more traditional-looking work clothes [with a bit of a twist]. I just love the classic look a blazer lends any outfit, whether it's in an unusual color or paired with pleated khakis or a mini skirt.

Since NYC can't decide if it's spring or fall, this look is really perfect. The only problem is... jackets take up lots of valuable closet space.

P.S. Check out an awesome giveaway from KELLYSHOESTRINGS!

tuesday snoozeday: another rainy day

What's going on, NYC? I thought it was finally summer, but it was cold and rainy again today. And you know what rainy days mean... trying to figure out how to wear leggings to work.

This is what I came up with... what do you think, appro? What do you wear when it's gross and miserable outside?

Friday

goodbye florida!

The week has flown by and I'm packing up my [suddenly much heavier] suitcase to return to NYC in just a few hours. It's always bittersweet returning to the real world....I have to pay for my own dinners again?? I can't laze around and watch The View every morning? But, of course, there are many things I'm looking forward to, like...

Well, at least it's going to be a balmy 85 degrees in NYC when I return so I can trick myself into staying in vacation mode for a teensy bit longer.

Talk to you from the Big Apple soon!
