overcoming short-comings

all photos via vanessa jackman
For someone who has been obsessed with fashion from a young age, I've always felt like I was in a sort of perpetual sartorial-life crisis. I'm a person blessed/cursed with Olsen stature--5'2", petite against all odds, and age-defying (I still get asked if I'm old enough to sit in the exit row on planes....you have to be 14!). I also always wanted to be a writer and would rather act like Harriet the Spy observing from the sidelines then a circus performer doing cartwheels on stage. So, my relationship with clothing is complicated. The odds of finding something to fit my preteen boy frame are already slim-to-none, but pair that with the desire to appear simultaneously fashionable, mature, and strong, yet not in-your-face ...well, that's hard.

I find it even more troublesome as a woman in her early stages in the workforce. Perception is reality, after all, and first impressions last a lifetime. Our wardrobes and our stature communicate so much to those around us, particularly those we want to impress the most and those with whom we interact the least. So I constantly wonder--what do I need to do to send the message I really want to send? These are a few rules I've learned in the past couple years.

1. Good shoes are deafening--in the best possible way

A great shoe is like the perfect punctuation to a precarious sentence. Nothing showcases your intention, nor attitude, like the shoes you choose. If nothing else, they get noticed--and so will you. During a recent presentation I was nervous to give, someone rushed up to me afterwards to ask where I had gotten my perfect-for-any-occasion lace-up suede wedges and gushed for minutes (they were from Zara, if you must know!). Clearly, good shoes are essential to--just as important as?--a great presentation.

And, by the way, I was never a heel-wearer until I started working (I rebelled--I figured I just wasn't meant to be taller than Mary Kate!), so I truly believe a similar effect can be achieved with flats.... as long as they have some 'tude, like a pair made of leopard-printed pony hair.

2. Dress what you aren't, to be what you want

Apparently, I can come across as, someone told me once, "a meek little nothing." Basically, my worst nightmare in a nutshell. Yes, I'm small, I'm quiet(er), and have a super-young face--but that doesn't sum me up! So, ironically, I get the best responses when I dress completely opposite to the way one might expect. Even though I love girly looks, like circle skirts and polka dots, I look stronger and older when there's a bit of edge to an outfit. I'm working on choosing that short, flirty skirt in leather instead of lace (or pairing the lace with a vintage denim jacket and the aforementioned wedges). Or wearing a sweet, feminine blouse with a black bra. Sometimes it pays to scrape by with something that's almost too much, because... at least you were noticed.

3. Never underestimate the power of time and fit

If all else fails, you can't go wrong with classics. Nothing has become more apparent to me in the past year than the importance of fit, always, and the relevance of your looks. Wearing something that fits your body is the best way to make it look different. I actually look like I have a body when my clothes are close-fitting and it makes me feel better, so I stand straighter, too. (That's why I save my perfectly-fitting Helmut Lang dress for very important days.) Plus, wearing something that isn't the least bit trendy is somehow the easiest way to get noticed and stay remembered--in the day of fast fashion, it's refreshing.

What are your biggest style struggles and secrets? I'd love to know!

It was quite a day. At least I found my new perfect rainy-day outfit. Practical, no?

accessory love: a peace treaty

I know. I was in love upon seeing jewelry by A Peace Treaty (in the latest issue of Marie Claire), too. I probably don't need to tell you how admirable the company is to get you to fall even more in love, but I will.

APT was founded by a duo who share an interest in creating high-end, ethically-produced goods while employing artisans living in areas of socio-political strife. The owners, Farah Malik and Dana Arbib, have done everyone a favor--including us! Their commitment to seeking out artists who use ancient techniques throughout the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and Europe have led to some of the most scrumptious looking scarves and uniquely crafted jewelry I've seen in a long time! Extra perk? The prices aren't too-high-to-do-good. So purchase away!

Warning: The website may drive you crazy since so many of the fabulous goods are out of stock, but it's for a great reason. All pieces are limited edition, handmade, and some proceeds are even donated to a non-profit development organization called Counterpart International. Still swooning??

You may know of my obsession with a little website called Refinery29... Well, they're currently looking for their next style blogger--and it could be me! (Or you, for that matter!) Enter yourself or show me some love here.

what i wish i was wearing right now

photos via style.com
Is it just me or is Celine's Pre-Fall 2011 collection all over the map? There's menswear detailing (love/hate), colorblocking (on luxe fabrics--love; on denim--hate), huge furs (love), and droopy plaids (hate). Nonetheless, a couple looks definitely made me pause and think I WANT TO BE WEARING THAT RIGHT NOW--including that little leather-topped leopard number above. What do you think?

the key to effortless style: men's edition

all photos by tommy ton--via GQ

The thing I love about men's wear is how grounding and straight forward it can be. For men, it's really quite simple...

Combine clothes that fit
great ironing skills
+ a handy lint-roller
+ bonus: an unexpected detail

word of the day: sprezzatura

all milano photos via the sartorialist
One of my newest editorial obsessions is not even meant for readers of my gender. It's Gilt Groupe's editorial venture to reach today's fashion-savvy male: The Gilt MANual. (clever, no?) Not only do I admire the fresh, magazine-like layout, I'm learning new things about the metrosexual man's psyche and even some fabulous vocabulary. In their new series, Reply-All, I was introduced to the word "sprezzatura."

According to Wikipedia (another helpful obsession) "sprezzatura" is an Italian word that means, “a certain nonchalance, so as to conceal all art and make whatever one does or says appear to be without effort and almost without any thought about it.”  ....Of course the Italian's have a word for this.

There is no style more appealing than one that appears to be totally effortless, yet is completely full of interest. I aspire to have a certain kind of sprezzatura in my daily wardrobe--but I just can't stop thinking long enough for that nonchalance to kick in! Maybe I need to spend a few months in Italy, Eat Pray Love style, to really connect with my personal style... Hmm, there's a thought!

happy new year!

Hope you all had a very happy New Year and happy holidays! I spent it in Florida with the family. In 2011, I want to commit more time to my creative outlets... be it this blog, another blog, or some sort of online writing hub. I'll keep you updated :) I also need to get back into exercising--my laziness is getting out of control!

What are your goals for the year?

Off to savor my last day of vacation. Chat with you all when I get back to New York!

Wednesday

today i'm feeling....

Hopeful, but wired! My brain's been buzzing non-stop lately, making it really hard to sleep. But at least I'm feeling upbeat about the things that are keeping me awake (a lovely change!).

So, what's my retail therapy for the day?

....Velvet shoes
via aldo shoes
I'm craving a totally impractical, but comforting purchase. Plush velvet in a sweet style reminds me of childhood--and yet serves as a perfectly unexpected addition to an edgy holiday look. I think that would give me some clothesure, maybe even lull me to sleep!

be a man: wear a suit... and follow your dreams

via the sartorialist
There's really nothing more attractive on a man than a crisp white shirt and perfectly-tailored suit. Maybe it's for antiquated reasons--it suggests power or a man bringing home the bacon or something. But, still, I loved it when my boyfriend was in banking for that (though pretty much only that) reason.

Last night I went to an event for recent alumni from my college and met a '06 grad who runs a custom cut menswear business with one partner. Um, awesome. And his outfit was a pretty great billboard for it, too! He was an engineering student, or something, and just decided to go for something he's always been interested in. That makes me think...I needn't be so hesitant to do the things that really interest me.

So, we'll see. In the meantime... what do you like your man to wear?

Wednesday

weather gods: i need my fall

Something crazy is going on--the weather is fluctuating in New York between 40 and mid-60's, rainy and so-sunny-I'm-sweating-with-my-holiday-latte. Luckily, Refinery29 showed off more of Mr. Newton's amazing street style photographs last week so I could live vicariously through them when the temperature creeped upwards. My favorites...

I love the unexpected rust color of that overcoat, the playfulness of light, printed scarves paired with a heavy fur, and the continuation of shorts-as-daywear with thick as hell tights. I'm in Florida for the Thanksgiving holiday, but you can bet I'll be mimicking these looks when I return to 40-degree weather again in NYC on Sunday!

workwear wednesday: an ode to mad men

I haven't personally been sucked into the Mad Men madness, but I still find myself influenced by the uber-ladylike fashions. That's why I love Bee's super feminine yet cozy get-up...

via atlantic pacific

'Til I get my hands on the perfect fit-and-flare dress, I'll recreate this look with a full skirt, fitted tank, boyfriend cardigan, and thick sweater-like tights. For that perfect fur wrap touch though... well, I think I'd better get thrifting!

What was your favorite work look this week?

Monday

wardrobe woes: topping it off

I always find myself stocking up on skirts, pants, dresses, and little jackets. My closets are overflowing with them, my drawers packed to the brim. But... uh, I seem to be missing something...
What top do I wear with those awesome new pants? What do I slip on under my new jacket?
the perfect top! ...but where'd she get it? via street peeper
It seems I have trouble topping it off, so to speak. Tops are the hardest thing for me to buy--whether they just don't fit my petite chest in the right way or I simply can't justify spending nearly the cash on a silk top when a dress is slightly more. My major Christmas wish? A new, effortlessly cool, super-versatile collection of wear-forever blouses.

The question is... where can I find them? I'd love your tips and tricks!

Sunday

sunday kinda-fun-day: the perfect brew

Oh, my love/hate relationship with Sunday is never-ending. I hate how quickly the weekend goes by. I love that after all my Sunday chores it's perfectly acceptable to just lay around.

from Alison via flickr

I'm such a fan of Alison's latest post over at And flowers pick themselves because it depicts exactly how I like to spend every Sunday morning: with the perfect latte. My two favorite neighborhood picks? Grey Dog (a latte the size of a bowl of soup... yes, please! ) and Cafe Grumpy (the perfect name & seriously strong brews!).

Where do you like to start your Sundays?

Hope you had a great weekend!

Wednesday

workwear wednesday: cozy skirting

I almost-unknowingly copied this outfit all the way down to the grey scarf for work today (of course, I've had it in my favorite images folder for weeks, so how accidental could it really have been....).

Since it's so hard for me to find pants that fit my petite frame, I'm down for any excuse to continue wearing skirts through winter... and I love that looked polished while really being all bundled up! How do you guys stay cozy-chic in this cold weather?

Monday

fall fashion: cozy glam

Who says you have to dress drab just because it's hailing outside and the sun has disappeared by 5pm?

I love this printed gown paired with a comfy cozy cable knit. In fact... I love anything silky and fancy paired with a huge casual sweater. Perfect way to get more use out of that turquoise silk skirt I got at the Reiss sale in August!

Thursday

shoe love: velvet criss cross heels

I don't know how to explain my love for this shoe...

but it just continues to drool [ha, a Freudian-type-slip?] grow!

Sugar daddy, where art thou?

Wednesday

workwear wednesday: be wild

People always say that animal prints are classics--and I always thought, "SAYS WHO?!" But recently, perhaps because my VP loves anything and everything animal, I've started to come around to the idea.

I love this look for work. For the cooler temps, I'd pair it with a slouchy sweater, or simple black tank and blazer, tights, and clunky black wedges.

Do you dare do animal?

Sunday

happy halloween!

I'm convinced, now more than ever, that Halloween is cursed for me. I've always had bad associations since I got the flu on Halloween so often as a kid--and yesterday I woke up with a stomach bug and felt worse than I've felt in years! Alas, if I had gone out last night, these were my costume options/ideas:

1. had I not cut my hair off on Thursday [and if I'd found a black hat]

2. if anyone would've been able to ID me..

3. a little more glam, and hair-cut-relevant

What were you this year? Hope you had a better evening than I did!

xx

Tuesday

article remix: bundle up

I finally got the new laptop I've mentioned a few times--though I'm still trying to work out the kinks [like, why is the battery draining when it's not even open? Why are these keys so damn stiff?]. But anyway, the idea was to get a new, light weight, all-mine laptop and I'd be able to go to cafes and blog my little heart away....clearly this has not gone exactly according to plan.

However, I'm trying to change that! So today, as I set up all my fashionable bookmarks, I saw this front-page headline on Style.com: A NEW START: ten ways to freshen up your wardrobe come spring

I'm sorry, but it's the beginning of FALL! Glorious, leaf-changing, layer-worthy fall. We've been waiting and waiting for it and [though the weather continues to be a little nutty] it's kind of finally here! So excuse me if I want to dismiss the latest spring shows and instead think about bundling up, and all the wonderful ways in which we can do it. So, here is what I'd like to replace that post with:

BUNDLE UP: ten items you need to stay cozy for fall
